Common problems / 02

Darkened entrance tiles and dirt that will not come off

Scrubbing with a brush or changing detergents does not remove the darkening on the entrance tiles.

Key points

Stubborn darkening on entrance tiles is rubber from shoe soles, dust and soil, and oils that have worked into the fine unevenness of the tiles and joints. Scrubbing only the surface leaves it inside. When we check the cause, wash, and apply a treatment that makes it harder for dirt to soak in, dirt comes off more easily with regular cleaning.

Tile floor before application. Oil has soaked in and darkened the whole surface.
The photograph is one example. We decide on the cause after checking on site.

01

Possible causes

  • Rubber from shoe soles, dust and oil have worked into the fine unevenness of tiles and joints
  • The dirt has soaked into the tiles and joints rather than sitting on the surface
  • Wax or coating applied earlier is holding the dirt

02

What we check on site

  • The type of tile (glazed or not, surface roughness) and the condition of the joints
  • Whether the dirt is on the surface or has soaked in
  • Whether wax or coating has been applied before

We do not decide on the cause, or whether the work can be done, from photographs alone.

03

How we deal with it

  • Remove the existing darkening with washing and stain removal
  • Apply anti-soiling treatment that makes it harder for dirt to soak in, so it comes off more easily with regular cleaning
  • Record the date of work, extent, details and photographs

04

What it cannot do

  • It does not fix chipped, cracked or worn tiles
  • Regular cleaning is still needed after application. It does not stop dirt from settling

05

Before you try it yourself

Strongly acidic or alkaline detergents can damage joints and stone. Test them in an inconspicuous spot before use. Darkening that will not come off whatever you do may have soaked in.

06

What affects cost and time

It varies with the size of the entrance, the type of tile, and how deeply the dirt has soaked in. We also accept requests for the entrance alone.

The on-site survey and estimate are free. Where there are costs, such as for distant locations or when scaffolding is needed, the installer in charge will tell you in advance.
